Mushaka Red Bourbon coffee is part of Rwanda’s rich coffee heritage, deeply tied to the country’s shift toward high-quality specialty coffee. The Bourbon variety itself has a long history, originating from Yemen before being introduced to the Bourbon Islands (now Réunion) by French missionaries in the 1700s. Over time, it spread to Africa, where it thrived in Rwanda’s high-altitude regions.
Mushaka Red Bourbon is grown in Rwanda’s western coffee-producing areas, where the elevation and climate create ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation. This results in the coffee’s signature bright raspberry acidity, deep dark plum richness, and smooth honey sweetness. The emphasis on careful processing—often washed or natural methods—enhances its clarity and complexity.
Rwanda’s coffee industry underwent a transformation in the early 2000s, focusing on specialty-grade production. Mushaka Red Bourbon is a product of this shift, benefiting from improved farming techniques and global recognition. Today, it stands as a prime example of Rwanda’s ability to produce elegant, fruit-forward coffees with refined sweetness.
